GOVERNMENT AGREES TO GROWING LAND SPACE TO PLANT COGNAC VINEYARDS

Cognac Economy is Up
Cognac Economy is Up
Cognac sales have been rising for four years, thanks to exports. Plans were approved this week to expand its vineyard areas by almost 3,500 ha next year, in addition to the present 75,000 ha in the appellation.
Sales of cognac
In the 2017-18 season (August to July), cognac sales grew for the fourth consecutive year, up 8.2% in volume and 5.4% in value over the previous year. Exports accounted for 98% of sales, still driven by the North American market, with Asia the fastest-growing region.

A record high of 205.9 million bottles were shipped during the campaign, for a turnover of 3.2 billion euros, according to the BNIC.

BRANDY REVIVAL IN CALIFORNIA: SAVE WHISKY DRINK BRANDY

Save Whisky Drink Brandy
Save Whisky Drink Brandy

California Brandy is coming back!

I have known it for a long time and it is starting to look like I was right.
Why I anticipated this revival?

When I came to California in 1996 for the first time I was surprised by the concept of 'single grape varietal'. A concept rather foreign to me as I was coming from the traditional blended grape varietals from the local appellation which is the way wines are presented in France. This discovery was later to become my impetus for producing Monteru Single Grape Brandyin 2008.

As I ventured into the wine world in the early 2000s in California and later into the distilled spirits it appeared to me that it was just a matter of time before California would reclaim the brandy category it once had.

===>The evidence were:
  • California and its concept of wine and entrepreneurial way of life,
  • California single grape varietal wine thriving business,
  • Micro-brewery and later Micro-distillation boom,
  • Spirits venturing into single ingredients such as Rye, specific type of Potatoes, wheat versus corn and etc. I noticed a real interest for studying the process and original ingredients,
  • Regain and later explosion for the Mixology, combined with the search of better ingredients,
  • People interests for organic, handmade, farm-to-table, sustainability, ... eventually culminating to local is better than far away things. A concept which is well executed by brands such as Tito's Vodka (starting from Texas) or FEW (starting from Chicago's suburbs) for instance.
All of these factors combined and symbiotically moving have increased my confidence in the return of brandy.

TOP 100 MOST VALUABLE BRAND FROM INTERBRAND LIST HENNESSY 98th

9th October, 2018

Hennessy (no.98/100), Jack Daniel's (no.84/100) and Johnnie Walker (no.97/100) have been ranked among the top 100 most valuable global brands on the Interbrand Best Global Brands 2018 list.
Brown-Forman-owned Jack Daniel's - which was ranked 84 on the list - moved two places down from last year to make it the highest-ranking spirit brand for the third year in a row. Interbrand valued the brand at US$5.64 billion, up 6% from 2017.

Diageo-owned Johnnie Walker made the list at 97, falling by one place from last year. Returning to the list for the ninth consecutive year, Johnnie Walker was valued at US$4.73bn - up 7% on last year.
A new entry to the list was LVMH-owned Hennessy Cognac at 98, valued at US$4.72bn.
Smirnoff vodka, which is also produced by Diageo, dropped off the top 100 list after ranking at 97 last year.

The spirits brands are three of six alcohol brands to make the list, which also includes beer brands Heineken, Budweiser and Corona.

"I'm very proud to see Johnnie Walker recognised by Interbrand as one of the 2018 Best Global Brands," said John L Williams, global brand director for Johnnie Walker.

"Johnnie Walker has been the world's most popular Scotch for more than 60 years - a true global giant, and yet one that is crafted by a small team of 12 whisky masters with the finest malts from the four corners of Scotland.

"It's an incredibly exciting time to work on this iconic brand - we've just unveiled White Walker in collaboration with HBO and Game of Thrones, and are hard at work in preparation for a new Johnnie Walker brand experience in Edinburgh."

The ranking is based on three key components that contribute to a brand's cumulative value:
1) the financial performance of the brands and services,
2) the role the brand plays in influencing customer choice,
3) and the strength the brand has to command a premium price or secure earnings for the company.

ARMAGNAC ENCANTADA: A New Independent Bottler in Armagnac

Armagnac L'Encantada
Armagnac L'Encantada

K&LWINES tells us all about it!

L’Encantada is a new armagnac independent bottlerwhich has been bringing out excellent Armagnacs says K&LWines.

To understand what makes this stuff special, you have to understand a little bit about Armagnac. French brandy production, especially in Armagnac, is much different than the American distilled spirits industry. There are a few large producers, but by in large, Armagnac is made by farmers and wine makers who distill some of their extra grapes in a travelling still that comes around to the farms.

Many of them just stick the casks in their barns and basements, a little bit here, a little bit there. Eventually they will bottle them, maybe for family and friends, maybe for small markets, or sell them to a larger company that bottles brandy or even makes liqueur; it's sort of a Gascon retirement fund.

L'Encantada was essentially knocking on farm doors and asking to buy these casks.  They have casks from around seven small producers, a number of which only made brandy for a limited time, and all of their brandies are bottled at cask strength without additives.

HEALTHY COGNAC SALES MAKE GOOD RESULTS FOR REMY COINTREAU

September 27, 2018

We expect a continued strong performance in the Cognac division (c.80% profits) and expect 2QE group org sales +9.0% (vs 1Q 5.9%). We like Remy's category exposure and see upside as the CEO rolls out her vision for the co as a super-premium business. While we like Remy, trading at 29.9x cal 2019 PE, shares need upgrades to perform. We remain at HOLD.

What's new? Remy reports 1H sales on 17 October. We expect 1H org sales +7.6% with 2Q +9.0% vs 1Q 5.9%. The drivers of the acceleration in 2Q, we believe, are continued robust cognac demand (we model 2Q cognac org sales +12% vs 1Q +11.1%) with benefit of easier comps, as well as some positive impact from technical effects in Partner Brands. For full details of our expectations, refer to detail within this report.

Cognac (67% sales / 81% profits) - likely to remain robust. We model 1H cognac org growth +11.6% with 2Q +12% vs 1Q +11.1%. Within this, we expect US and Europe to be a bit stronger vs 1Q. Whilst Asia depletions (sell-out) momentum is likely to be unchanged vs 1Q (vols solid DD, sales strong DD), we believe shipments (sell-in) will be more normalised. In 1Q, China cognac shipments ran modestly ahead of depletions with some inventory replenishment after the strong CNY; we expect shipments to match depletions in 2Q.

MORE COGNAC SOLD IN USA IN 2018 THAN EVER

Cognac Economy is Up
Cognac Economy is Up

Source: ShankenDailyNews

Cognac is enjoying a renaissance. Last year global volumes increased by a robust 5.5% to 15.4 million cases, with the U.S. at the forefront, accounting for nearly 40% of total consumption. After crossing the 6-million-case mark on 9.7% growth in 2017, Cognac has now expanded its U.S. volume by nearly 2 million cases in just the past three years. With demand skyrocketing—particularly for the VS segment—keeping adequate supply in the pipeline is now the major concern.

Hennessy continues to drive the market in the U.S., averaging an annual increase of 12.9% over the past five years. In 2017, the brand increased 7.4% to just under 4 million cases, and might have risen higher if not for its supply constraints.

Still, Hennessy is now nearly twice as large as it was in 2012, when it depleted 2.16 million cases. “Hennessy has plans for growth across all our qualities in the coming years; however, we do need to continue to manage our growth and supply carefully,” says Giles Woodyer, senior vice president for Hennessy at Moët Hennessy USA. “We’re continuously improving and building our supply development efforts including expanded relationships with growers, new plantations, and strategic investments such as our recent considerable investment in our packaging and logistics site, Pont Neuf, which opened last year.”

This new 280,000-square-foot Pont Neuf facility will allow Hennessy to produce around 10 million cases annually by 2020, up from 7 million cases currently.

A NEW BRANDY FOR CALIFORNIA: FRANCIS FORD COPPOLA BRANDY

cognacdailynews-Coppola-Brandy-California

After Gallo, the Coppola family is also getting into the brandy category.
What is going on!!!

"Maria Gaetana Agnesi 1799 Brandy from Francis Ford Coppola sourced by Family Coppola.
The grape based brandies for Agnesi 1799 are sought, sourced, and blended by The Family Coppola and our winery’s master blender from barrel stocks in California’s finest brandy distilleries.

Our initial brandy release is a blend of 2012 Dolcetto grapes from Russian River Valley and 2009 French Colombard grapes from the Central Valley. Agnesi 1799 is a true taste of California soil, ambient yeast, naturally filtered water, and warm climate of the Golden State. Through careful selection of barrels and delicate blending of water and spirit, our brandy assumes the best qualities of the artisanally-crafted individual spirits.

By sourcing brandy made in different types of stills, both Old World Alembic Charentais stills and modern column stills, and from various local grapes, we are able to craft a proprietary blend that we believe is greater than the sum of its parts." (from Coppola Website)

Small batch 5 years old Brandy!

TASTING NOTES
Nose
Layered cinnamon in front, small amount of tobacco. Hints of vanilla and almonds give it a well-rounded profile of oak characters.

Taste
Overall high complexity. Baking spices on entry. Small hints of clove. Toasted bread in mid pallet. Pleasant mouth coating, some sweetness in the mid-palate, and a silky smooth finish. Very clean overall, with some honey.

"Agnesi 1799 is as fine as any Old World sipping brandy, yet comes with no pretense that it’s above being mixed into your favorite cocktails" says Coppola.

THINKING OF SELLING YOUR RARE WINES AND SPIRITS?

Auction Hammer
Auction Hammer

BY MELANIE YOUNG
September 18, 2018

Whether you want to downsize a prized collection or can finally procure an elusive bottle, here are expert tips on how to do it.

Global wine auction sales are on the upswing, according to specialists. Jamie Ritchie, head of Sotheby's global wine program, projects $90 million in sales by year's end, which would top the existing record of $88 million in 2010.

Though nothing has topped the Jeroboam of 1945 Château Mouton Rothschild that sold for $310,700 in February 2007 at Sotheby's.

If time is of the essence and you're comfortable with settling on a firm price, a direct sale may be the best choice. However, with an auction, the sky is the limit.

Like any major transaction, it's wise to comparison shop. The reputation and success rate of an auction house is paramount, along with the size and reach of its customer base.

Many houses have minimums based on the value of the wine lot, which can be one item or an entire collection. Also, the lot's size and value can affect the seller's fee, which ranges from zero to 18%.

It's the auction house's responsibility to appraise the wine and set a price. Munro stresses that sellers should submit important documentation well in advance, especially those with large collections.

Most auctions take place between September and May.
Bordeaux and Burgundy are more in demand but scotch and Japanese whiskies are both growing.

One example is the current offerings slated for t e coming 13th Oct. 2018 auction at Sotheby's New York. A bottle of 1926 Macallan Scotch is priced at $700,000 to $1.2 million, a new lot estimate record for Sotheby's.

Join auction house mailing lists, and review past online sales and recent catalogs to compare what's selling.

Another consideration is the buyer's premium to the auction house, which can range from 19.5-24%.

BIG MONEY FOR MASSOUGNES COGNAC FROM 1805 IN THE UK

Massougnes Cognac from 1805
Massougnes Cognac from 1805

Source: https://www.thedrinksbusiness.com/

by Lucy Shaw

10th September, 2018

A Napoleon era Cognac from 1805 has sold for over $260,000 at Hedonism Wines in Mayfair, making it one of the most expensive bottles of Cognac ever sold in the UK.

The bottle in question is a three-quarter gallon imperial of 1805 Cognac Massougnes and its sales price of over $260,000 makes it one of the highest value single Cognac sales in history.

The bottle was acquired by Hermitage Cognacs 20 years ago from Marie-Antoinette des Allées, Comtesse de la Bourdelière - a direct descendant of King Louis VII, whose family owns the former Cognac producing estate.

The imperial was snapped up at wine lover's delight, Hedonism in Mayfair, by an undisclosed buyer.

In 2016 a bottle of 1801 Cognac Massougnes acquired by Hermitage Cognacs was sold to an anonymous Asian buyer at Hedonism Wines for $300,000.

"In over 30 years of buying and selling Cognac, this 1805 is one of the oldest and rarest I have ever come across.

"Massougnes produced famous pre-phylloxera Cognacs and we have dated their records back to at least 1730, making them the oldest known growers and sellers of brandies," said Hermitage's managing director, David Baker.

"At its peak the property covered 346 hectares, and Marie-Antoinette, the last remaining descendant of this famous family, has written a charming note about the 'life' of this extraordinary Cognac, which was created the same year as the Battle of Trafalgar," he added.

Founded in 1987, Hermitage Cognacs specialises in the sale of old and rare Grande Champagne Cognacs from old family houses.

COGNAC EXPORTS HIGH TIME HIGH

Cognac Economy is Up
Cognac exports in 2017-18 are valued at €3.2 billion, an increase of 8.2% in volume (250.9 million bottles) and 5.4% in value compared to 2016-17.
This is the fourth consecutive year of export growth, according to the Bureau National Interprofessionnel du Cognac(BNIC), the cognac trade body.
The American zone, with ALENA, was the largest export area, taking 89.8 million bottles, a increase of 9.4% in volume and 0.2% in value. The US was the largest ALENA export zone, with a ninth consecutive year of export growth.
The Far East, with 60.9 million bottles, was in second place with a growth of +13.5% in volume and +12.4% in value. Singapore (26.6 million bottles) and China (26.2 million) were the main export countries.
In Europe, exports were stable at 41.3 million bottles, down by 2% in volume but up 3% in value.

MORE COGNAC SOLD = MORE COGNAC TO BE PRODUCED: 2018 WILL BE A GOOD HARVEST!

Big Data Logo
Big Data Logo

Even with a dry summer the production of grapes in Cognac are looking goodaccording to the BNIC by 31st August 2018.
"Quasiment pas de pluie lors de la semaine passée. Dans l’ensemble le vignoble supporte bien cette sécheresse, toutefois certaines parcelles montrent des symptômes déjà marqués : jaunissement du feuillage, baies petites et molles. Les températures encore élevées en milieu de semaine provoquent de nouveaux dégâts d’échaudage. Elles se rafraîchissent nettement en fin de semaine."

Source: http://www.cognac.fr/cognac/_fr/4_pro/index.aspx?page=actualite&id=7501&src=flash

Hence, the Government and Cognac Society (BNIC) have agreed for a rather high rate of harvest per hectar of vineyard for the production of cognac, i.e., 14,64 hl AP /ha.
This decision follows a rather large demand for cognac in 2018 with + 8,2% in volume and 5,4% in value on 31st juillet 2018.

MORE AND MORE SPIRITS DISTILLERIES IN THE USA

Craft Pot Still Distillery
Craft Pot Still Distillery

The number of craft distilleries in the USA is ten times larger in 10 years. This is showing a healthy growth.
Original Title: Number of US craft distilleries rises by 26%
Source: beveragedaily.com
July 18, 2018

In 2016 there were 1,315 active distillers, which rose to 1,589 in 2017, according to figures compiled by the American Craft Spirits Association (ACSA), Park Street Imports, and the IWSR.
A craft spirits producer is defined by the ACSA as one that has not removed from bond more than 750,000 proof gallons; markets itself as craft; is not openly controlled by a large supplier and has no proven violation of the ACSA Code of Ethics.

All about local?

The West boasts the largest number of distilleries (32.7% of total US craft distilleries), but the South - with classic spirits states like Texas, North Carolina and Kentucky - comes a close second (29.3%). The Midwest accounts for 19.1% and the Northeast 18.9%.
California is the state with the most distilleries: a total of 148, which makes up 9.3% of the nation's total. This is followed by New York, Washington, Texas and Colorado.

On average, more than half of a craft spirit producer's US sales come from within its home state (18% at the facility and 34% outside its premises).
"Nearly one-fifth of all sales take place at the production facility, underscoring the importance of tasting rooms and on-site retail to the bottom line,"? says ACSA in its 2017 annual report.

Meanwhile, employment in the craft spirits industry has grown nearly 50%: from 13,239 full time jobs in 2016 to 19,579 jobs in 2017.
The ACSA highlights 2017's 'most game-changing moment' as when Congress passed the Craft Beverage Modernization and Tax Reform Act (CMBTRA) on December 19 as part of the larger Tax Cuts and Jobs Act.

"The significance of the tax vote cannot be overstated, for it is the first time in modern history that the federal government has acted to lower the Federal Excise Tax (FET) on the nation's small craft distillers," ?explains the ACSA.

"The legislative action has helped level the playing field for spirits within the broader craft beverage space, putting distillers on par with breweries and wineries. Prior to the law's enactment, a craft spirits producer had paid 5.4 times more FET than a craft brewer and 16.4 times more FET than a small winery, for equal quantities of beverage alcohol.?

"While it certainly is a time to celebrate, our work is only just beginning. ACSA's priority now is to ensure that Congress votes to make the tax relief permanent."?
The American Craft Spirits Association is a registered non-profit trade group representing the U.S. craft spirits industry.

Key Takeaway
We like Remy's category exposure (80% cognac) and see upside as the CEO rolls out her vision for the company as a super-premium business. Fundamentals in the Cognac Division remain strong which should support EBIT growth 12-13% in F19. While we like Remy, trading at 33.3x CY19E (vs staples 18.9x), the shares need upgrades to perform. Remain at HOLD.

Attractive category exposure... With 80% of the business cognac, rising further if other brown spirits Metaxa, St Remy, Mount Gay, Islay Spirits are included, Remy offers a highly attractive brown spirits portfolio that is well positioned to capitalise on the spirits premiumisation trend.
...with a vision as a super-premium business... Remy does not have the financial superpower to compete head-on with spirits majors. Instead, the business will borrow from the CEO's experience in luxury goods, relying more on digital and direct to consumer sales than traditional FMCG marketing.

Premiumisation strategy on-track - co is making good progress with the premiumisation model with 53% of the portfolio now over $50 a bottle vs 45% in F15. The move to 60%-65% over the next three to five years should be feasible given that 80% of sales are over $40. Given that it is unlikely that Cointreau can be sold for >$50 a bottle, the conversion of this 27% of the portfolio ($40-$50 a bottle) is likely to take place across cognac (1738), gin (Botanist), Mount Gay (xo) and higher variants of Metaxa.

Margin outlook - positive trends. Given the stronger than expected margin growth in F18, the company has raised its margin guidance to 240-300bps F18-20E. With 130bps captured in F18 (22.0%), this argues for between 50-85bps org margin expansion p.a. F19 and F20. Although the company is investing ahead of growth in A&P, margins should be driven by continued GM expansion given the company's premiumisation strategy.

What are the risks? Key risk for an investment in Remy is concentration risk in cognac & that consumers move away from cognac towards other brown spirits. However, we see an attractive outlook for the cognac industry with scarcity of inventory helping to drive a robust pricing environment.

What's changed? We increase F19 EPS c2% and our price target to $120 (from $105) to reflect the upgrade and the roll-forward of our DCF by one year.

86% OF REMY COINTREAU'S PROFITS COMES FROM COGNAC

Remy Cointreau's profits boosted by China's thirst for cognac

Remy Cointreau has reported higher-than-expected annual profits, helped by strong demand for its premium cognacs in China, and predicted more earnings growth this year.
The maker of Remy Martin cognac and Cointreau liqueur said its strategy of selling higher-priced spirits to boost profit margins was delivering strong results.

Remy has been focusing on selling spirits priced at $50 a bottle or more, as part of a strategy that has benefited from a rebound in Chinese demand.
Remy's strategy has differed from that of rival Pernod Ricard, which has launched less expensive brands in China.

The private consumption of drinks and spirits has been recovering in China, offsetting the impact from the country's anti-corruption crackdown over the past few years which had hit sales of premium brand drinks.

Remy Martin cognac, which makes 86% of group profits, achieved a margin of 26.9% of sales, representing an organic increase of 1.3 percentage points.

Remy Cointreau's stock market valuation is closer to that of many luxury good stocks, rather than food and drinks stocks.

RECORD SALES PRICE FOR A WINE BOTTLE

cognacdailynews-auction-hammer-icon

A bottle of Vin Jaune, meaning literally ‘yellow wine’ in French, has sold for a record price of over €100,000 to a Canadian buyer.

One of the oldest bottles of wine in the world was sold on Saturday, 26 May, at an auction in France, for €103,700 ($121,000).

The exceptional longevity of the yellow wine of Arbois comes from its particular mode of elaboration, which consists of raising the wines “under veil”; that is to say, with a form of oxidation which transcends perfumes and limits ageing.

The wines have been lovingly cared for by eight generations of heirs of Pierre Vercel (1694-1754), whose family is known to have made wine in Arbois since the 14th century and whose Grand Commander has maintained the tradition. He had remained discreet about the number of bottles he had carefully preserved, and their location.

CAN ANCIENT INGREDIENTS MAKE BETTER SPIRITS TODAY?

Heritage Corn Craft Whiskey’s Final Frontier?
Having tapped the bounty of heirloom grains, distillers are turning to the unexplored diversity of heritage corn to add nuance to their whiskeys.
JUNE 6, 2018 story: KARA NEWMAN

Once upon a time, nobody cared for whiskey being made with Rye, Corn or Wheat...
Now people are into details. What kind of corn?
Just a little over a century ago, hundreds of varieties of corn grew across the fields of the United States.

Today, almost all corn-based whiskey, including bourbon, is sourced from a single type of corn. But some craft distillers are trying to revive those ancient strains, creating spirits with greater nuance by stretching back to the past.

This sort of obsessiveness has become a feature of the craft whiskey movement. But even as producers increase their focus on the sourcing of grainslike ancient strains of rye, and even how they’re malted, corn remains the last frontier.
See, article Souce below for more details ...

That reminds me, that in 2015 I revived the concept of 1870 cognac by producing a cognac 'à la pre-phylloxera way' that is using single grape 'Folle Blanche', single cask, vintage and why not from Bons Bois with a higher proof which is looked down for no real reasons besides commercial reasons. I did not do high proof or cask strength because one as to go with baby steps. All of this was too much at once and it was wise to get a few great and 'good old' concepts first and later we will see!

Meet Comandon Cognac 2012 Single Cask Folle Blanche from Bons Bois 41.3% Alc/Vol.
Only 120 bottles were released in the USA and we sold them all to aficionados who were paying attention.

French vineyard sales up 2.8% in 2017
Source:
https://www.vitisphere.com/
June 04 2018

The French market for vineyards is still buoyant with an increase in trade. Prices have risen irrespective of whether the vineyards are within an appellation area or not, or eligible to produce appellation brandies.

In 2017, the vineyard market was bullish with sales progressing well. A total 9,460 transactions (+2.8%) were finalised covering 16,900 ha (+7.9%) worth 1.3 billion euros (+59.9%). "Bought and sold acreage is at its highest level for the past 25 years," commented Loïc Jégouzo, from Terres d'Europe-Scafr, on 31 May in Paris at a press conference by the Safer network on land prices. The spectacular increase in values can be ascribed to the sale of several prestigious estates. "Ten transactions alone represent 31% of the total market value", said Jégouzo. But even if these transactions are excluded, value sales are still on the rise.
Champagne slowdown

From a price perspective, increases were posted across-the-board. In appellation or PDO vineyards, the average price is 143,900 euro/ha, a rise of 2.3% compared to 2016. "But if Champagne is excluded, the increase is much more marked: + 4.2% (Editor's note: at an average price of 69,300 euro /ha), because Champagne only rose by 0.8% in 2017", explained Jégouzo. All wine regions have progressed except Corsica. The highest increases were observed in Alsace (+7.2%), Burgundy (+4.9%), the Rhone Valley and Provence (+5.5%). "The most prestigious AOCs have continued to increase and are driving up the prices of intermediate AOCs," noted Jégouzo. The price of vines for appellation brandies has soared by 8.1% to 46,900 euro /ha. "The increase is due to record levels of Cognac exports", he said. The price of vineyards outside appellation areas increased by 3% to 13,800 euro /ha.

WINE WITH TRANSPRENT LABELS

Clinging Glasses

You Don't Really Know What's in Your Wine. These Winemakers Want to Change That.
Source: vinepair.com
Christine Clark
June 6, 2018

Most of us have a pretty good idea of how we're supposed to be eating - less sugar, more fiber, more good fats. Shop local, pay attention to labels, blah blah blah. We know the drill.
If you try to hold your wine to a similar standard of transparency, however, you'll end up frustrated. There's no requirement for winemakers to list their ingredients. Anywhere.
Unlike most of what we consume, wine is not regulated by the Food and Drug Administration, part of Health & Human Services. It falls under the purview of the Alcohol and Tobacco Tax and Trade Bureau, part of the U.S. Treasury. While winemakers do have to prove that their ingredients are safe, they don't have to list them. A winemaker can add sugar before or during fermentation in a process called chaptalization, potato protein isolate or polyvinyl-pyrrolidone (try saying that five times fast), or many others, and the consumer has no way of knowing.

That's where Donkey & Goat comes in. Pick up a bottle of anything made by this Northern California winery and you'll see an ingredients list that reads, "Hand-Harvested Grapes and Sulphur" or, sometimes, just "Hand-Harvested Grapes." Grab a bottle of wine made by almost anyone else, and look as hard as you want for its ingredients. You probably won't find them. Even a thorough internet search is bound to leave you empty-handed.

Donkey & Goat started labeling the ingredients on some 2014 wines after owner and winemaker Jared Brandt read that Ridge Vineyards in Cupertino, Calif. had started sharing theirs publicly. Brandt adopted the practice as "a way to explain our wines and be transparent," he says
Jared and Tracey Brandt of Donkey & Goat started labeling their 2014 wines.
The company describes itself as making "natural wines," complete with quotation marks. Its grapes are sustainably (and, in some cases, biodynamically) grown on Sierra Nevada, Mendocino, and Napa farms, and the only thing winemakers ever add in the cellar is sulfur, and even that is used minimally and sometimes not at all.

"Sulfur is complicated," Brandt says. Many consumers have a hazy idea that sulfites are added to wines, and that we're not supposed to be fans of that for some reason, but we don't really know why. Headaches, maybe? Off-tasting juice? Asthmatic fits? Whatever the outcome, it doesn't sound good.
Winemakers are legally required to inform consumers when their wines contain sulfites, though only when there's 10 milligrams or more per bottle.
"Wine is allowed to have 125 PPM [parts per million] sulfur for reds and 200 PPM for whites," Brandt says. This translates to 125 milligrams per liter for reds, and 200 milligrams per liter for whites. "Dried fruits can have between 500 and 2,000 PPM of sulfur," he says.

Donkey & Goat wines that do contain sulfur have 25 PPM. "Some books say sulfur is a byproduct of fermentation," Brandt says. "I don't think this is true. We have made wines that have zero detectable SO2." Donkey & Goat's Pet-Nat and Gigi wines contain zero sulfur.

"Many other winemakers add commercial yeast to try and get specific flavors," Brandt says. "Then they add DAP [diammonium phosphate] and yeast nutrients to make that yeast work better. Tannins to make it more tannic. Acid for balance. The list goes on." Some of the weirder ingredients wineries use include gum arabic, or acacia, to round out tannins, and "fish bladder for fining," Brandt says.
Ingredients labels, or the lack thereof, speak to the ways certain laws prioritize companies' marketability over consumer awareness.

"Many ingredients are not required by law to be listed in any product," Brandt says, "In fact, they qualify as 'production aids.'" Velcorin, for example, is an organic dimethyl dicarbonate (DMDC). It's a popular stabilizer used to quell yeasts and bacterial growth in juices, sports drinks, and wines. DMDC is becoming increasingly controversial, though. It's toxic for at least the first four hours after it's added to a liquid, Brandt says. Despite a scary-sounding list of potential hazards, including corrosive runoff and combustible vapors, companies are not legally required to disclose when they've added DMDC to their products to consumers.

"Producers are afraid consumers would care and thus have lobbied to have it as an exemption and not required to be labeled," Brandt says. "Who wants to buy 'fresh-squeezed orange juice' if that's in there, too - which I have been told is very common," he adds.

There's something comforting about knowing exactly what goes into your glass, for sure, but transparent labeling surpasses sentimental marketing, or touchy-feely hyphenates like "all-natural" or "farm-fresh." Food allergies, digestive disorders, and other health concerns are on the rise, both in terms of anecdotal awareness and medical diagnoses. As a result, many of us are scratching our heads and looking for ways to adjust diets and lifestyles.

Learning what's in everything we consume, be it a fast-food cheeseburger or Napa Valley Sauvignon Blanc, empowers us. We ask better questions of our doctors, our food providers, and ourselves.
And we especially appreciate those who give us the answers, free of charge, without our even having to ask.

Cognac shortage deepens as crops destroyed

June 04, 2018

A little more than six months after Hennessy announced "constrained" supplies of Cognac, the industry has been plunged into crisis following devastating hailstorms in France.
More than 10,000 hectares of vineyards were damaged in late May, as pebble-sized hail stones pelted the region. Around 14% of the brandy-producing vines of Cognac were affected, with many vineyard owners saying that they had lost all hope of harvesting any grapes.
The storm hit areas not affected by this type of weather damage for more than 40 years, with just under 1000 farms suffering the ravages of the hail.
The Bureau National Interprofessionnel du Cognac (BNIC) the Cognac interprofessional organisation that acts on behalf of all Cognac growers and firms of the region said in a statement on May 26: "Our vineyards were again hit by a violent episode of hail.
"In this difficult moment, the BNIC, its elected officials and its teams express their greatest support to the winegrowers of Charente-Maritime and Charente whose vines were destroyed or damaged.
"Our services are currently in the field to evaluate the precise impact of this episode on our vineyards."
The president of the General Union of Cognac Winemakers, Christophe Véral added that it had been a "catastrophe" and a crisis meeting was likely to take place.
Two years ago, the Cognac region was also hit by hail storms. The extent of the economic impact of poor weather in Cognac for three straight years is not yet known, but is expected to be crippling.
It comes as Cognac is having a millenial-fuelled revival.
BNIC reports that cognac's three largest markets are the United States (78.7 million bottles), Singapore (23.6 million bottles) and China (22.6 million bottles).
As a large proportion of Singapore's imports are shipped on to China, it's likely that China is now the world's largest market for cognac by revenue.
According to Reuters, Hennessy owns around half of the global Cognac market.
However, the category's booming growth was already under strain due to the lack of supply Hennessy has in reserve.
In January, the wine & spirits arm of LVMH, Moet Hennessy, announced a solid jump in 2017 sales, with strong volumes growth for Hennessy Cognac (+8%), which came despite supply constraints that Moet Hennessy said slowed growth in the second half of the year.
It said supply issues, which the company highlighted throughout last year, were likely to continue in 2018, with supplies remaining "relatively constrained".
Hennessy has been planting more vines, but new vineyards will take up to six years to start producing usable grapes - even Hennessy's youngest Cognac is aged between two and eight years.
It's expected the shortage will really begin to bite in late 2019 to early 2020. Experts are suggesting that Cognac lovers stock up on more expensive bottles of Hennessy, such as the V.S.O.P., the X.O. and Hennessy Black.

THE SENSISTIVE SUBJECT OF CRAFT SPIRITS AND CONTRACT DISTILLING

Big Data Logo
Big Data Logo

The Spirits Business talks about a very sensitive subject, they are brave!!

Distilling under contract is a mysterious, but vital, part of the spirits industry. The Spirits Business lifts the lid on the operations and strategies of leading third-party producers, and explains why many so-called craft brands wouldn't be without them.

The production stories behind hundreds - perhaps thousands - of small, independent spirit brands are often left untold. As the craft renaissance grips the industry, romantic narratives of heritage and provenance are positioned front and centre on spirit labels, while the large-scale companies that actually distil or source the liquid in the bottle stay in the shadows.

Industry members and consumers are now becoming more aware of third-party producers, but their emergence into the public consciousness hasn't exactly been smooth. In recent years, some brands that use contract distillers have come under fire for what has been seen as a lack of transparency. The criticism has stretched from gin to American whiskey and beyond, but whiskey producers from the US have borne the brunt of the backlash.

Undoubtedly, third-party producers and suppliers enable fledgling spirits to hasten their launch date and dedicate valuable resources to their brand and market strategies. But it's not only 'craft' brands that benefit from the service; international drinks groups will often purchase sourced spirits to increase and accelerate their production.
Third-party production is even more pervasive when one considers that it also includes neutral grain spirit (NGS), which is used as the base for countless brand leaders in the white spirits world.

The Spirits Business offers 5 examples of bulk suppliers.

1) MGP Ingredients(USA)
One of the most prominent third -party spirits manufacturers in the world is MGP Ingredients. The company was formed in 1941 as an industrial distiller for the war effort, before moving into beverage alcohol some years later. It now owns two distilleries: one that creates vodka, gin and industrial alcohol, which is based in Atchison, Kansas; and another that distils whiskey, based in Lawrenceburg, Indiana.

2) Sasma (Netherlands)
Sasma is a supplier of base spirits and ready- to- bottle products such as Scotch, Bourbon, cachaça and Tequila for the beverage- alcohol industry. Representing a further aspect of third -party spirits, Sasma does not distil, but instead acts solely as a supplier, sourcing liquid from distilleries, traders and agents.

3) Thames Distillery(UK)
Thames Distillery was founded 21 years ago, it is one of the best-known third -party distillers in the UK, and predominantly produces gin and vodka.

4) Creamy Creation(Netherlands & USA)
Established in 1979, Creamy Creation is the market leader in emulsified beverages, supplying mixable and ready made dairy, soy and coconut -based beverages to the international drinks industry.

5) Alcohols Limited(UK)
Alcohols Limited is the owner of Langley Distillery, a prominent UK gin manufacturer that has more than 300 partners around the world. It produces about 70m bottles for the global gin market annually. The business was established in 1805, while the distillery itself dates back more than 200 years, and has been distilling gin since the early 1900s.

There is even trade shows for this industry. For instance, IBWSS gives supermarkets, retailers, restaurants, wineries, distilleries and other buyers a premier international platform to source bulk wine and spirits and meet private label suppliers. The theme of the 2018 IBWSS San Francisco conferenceis “Bulk up your bottom line”. This is your opportunity to learn all about how you can unlock new opportunities in private label, bulk and contract manufacturing.

Things get more complicated when the bulk suppliers start making their own brands too, as one may wonder about the conflict of interests and competiting against your customers.

BAD HAILSTORMS IN COGNAC AND DAMAGES IN SOUTH-WEST REGION

Hailstones 'the size of pigeon eggs' devastate Bordeaux vineyards

Source: https://www.telegraph.co.uk/
David Chazan
27 MAY 2018

Hailstorms have devastated thousands of acres of prime Bordeaux vineyards, prompting the French government to promise support for winegrowers, some of whom have lost their entire crop.
Cyril Giresse, a winegrower, said hailstones "the size of pigeons' eggs" destroyed grape buds and left vines bare on Saturday.

"The storm lasted only about 15 minutes, but in some places, there's nothing left at all," said Mr Giresse, who runs the Château Gravettes Samonac in Bordeaux's Côtes de Bourg appellation. "No leaves, no grapes, just the vines stripped as if the grapes had all been picked."
Jean-Dominique Château, another claret producer, said: "I've got nothing left. I've been growing grapes for 33 years and this is the worst storm I've ever seen. Last year we lost 40 per cent of our crop to hail but this year it's going to be an even worse disaster."

Stéphane Travert, the agriculture minister, said the government was assessing the extent of losses and would aid wine producers. "We'll take the necessary measures and we're ready to meet Bordeaux winemakers," he said.

Franck Jullion, the head of the producers' association in the "Blaye Côtes de Bordeaux" appellation, said: "It's a desolate vista, as if the vines had gone back to winter. Estates hit by frost last year will not recover. We're going to need a lot of support and solidarity."
Saint-Emilion, one of the most prestigious Bordeaux appellations, was spared, but parts of Médoc were badly hit, as were Cognac brandy producers in the Charente and Charente-Maritime departments.

Didier Gontier, director of the Côtes de Bourg appellation, said: "Winegrowers say they've got no vines left for next year so this is going to affect two years of production."
Bordeaux is France's largest wine-growing area, with about 300,000 acres of vineyards producing more than 700 million bottles of claret a year, ranging from cheap table wines to some of the world's most acclaimed and expensive vintages.

French wine and spirits exports amounted to more than £11 billion last year.
Wine industry leaders have opposed moves to tighten 1991 laws restricting alcohol advertising. President Emmanuel Macron has backed them, saying he drinks wine at lunch and dinner.
He has infuriated doctors by minimising public health concerns over wine and arguing that spirits and beer pose more of a problem because they are favoured by binge-drinkers.

COGNAC POPULARITY MAKES THE GLENLIVET SCOTCH WHISKY USE EX-COGNAC CASK FINISH

The Glenlivet Scotch Whisky Captain's Reserve Ex-Cognac Cask Finish
The Glenlivet Scotch Whisky Captain's Reserve Ex-Cognac Cask Finish

When I started making cognac finished in ex-casks in 2014, that is ex-Sauternes (Bordeaux's prestigious desert wine) and ex-Sherry casks (Spanish fortified wine from Jerez south of Spain) I was pretty much inspired by other spirits and in particular Scotch whiskies like Glendronach, Benriach or more available Glenmorangie. This was a good idea and as a matter of fact I won 'world best cognac' at San Francisco Spirits in 2016 for my vintage Oloroso Sherry cask finish.

Little did I think the scotch whisky producers would in turn use ex-cognac casks to finish their whiskies so quickly after this cask finish movement was started in the Cognac region. The Glenlivet is not the first Scotch Whisky finished in ex-cognac cask but it is the largest brand to venture into this direction which surely will get some people not feeling at ease.

This situation of finishing whiskies in ex-cognac cask is OK, but I would not suggest the opposite, i.e., finishing a cognac in ex-whisky casks. Why not? I do not think it will work out well. Perhaps a very peated whisky so as to bring some sort of smokiness to the cognac but I am not even sure that this is the way to go when working on smokey cognacs.

The Glenlivet distillery, based in Scotland’s Speyside region, is known for having serious heritage in the whisky world. Despite this history, those who make Scotch here are willing to follow current trends, such as the art of cask finishing, debuting recently a non-age statement bottling that’s been “selectively finished” in ex-Cognac casks.

The new The Glenlivet Captain’s Reserve, according to those behind it, will be part of the regular range of whisky from this distillery. Finished in ex-Cognac casks, it is said to be a tribute to Captain William Smith Grant, great-grandson of George Smith, founder of The Glenlivet. The Captain not only fought in the First World War in France, but later reportedly went on to guide the brand through the difficult Prohibition years.

“We know that Single Malt consumers are becoming increasingly adventurous and are seeking to explore new flavour profiles and finishes in the category,” said Alan Winchester, The Glenlivet master distiller, in a prepared statement. “Research shows that the global consumption of Cognac is expected to increase by some 2m cases by 2021. By introducing the Cognac casks into our maturation process, we are able to capitalise on the popularity of this flavour and add another dimension to our world-renowned portfolio. The Cognac casks’ influence will bring a real richness to the smooth and fruity style of The Glenlivet, which we’re confident new and existing Single Malt Scotch enthusiasts will enjoy.”

Plans call for Captain’s Reserve to price at a minimum of £45, or about $60 USD. You’ll find official tasting notes from The Glenlivet below for your consideration.
  • NOSE:Bursting with sweet and fruity aromas. Rich in honey and apricot jam, with notes of sweet cinnamon bread and a subtle sensation of spicy liquorice.
  • TASTE:Succulent flavours of mandarins in syrup, ripe poached pears and chocolate-dipped raisins.
  • FINISH:Incredibly smooth and luscious.

PUFF DADDY NEW BRANDY VS: CIROC VS

CIROC BRANDY VS MADE IN THE COGNAC REGION, BUT THIS NOT A COGNAC
CIROC BRANDY VS MADE IN THE COGNAC REGION, BUT THIS NOT A COGNAC

CIROC, the vodka made famous by the rapper Puff Daddy or Diddy, is launching a CIROC Brandy VS to answer its consumers' interest for brown spirits. Essentially, CIROC VODKA is made from local Cognac's region Mauzac Blanc and Ugni Blanc grapes. One of the earlier grape-based vodka

CIROC has often been accused of making a grappa or a brandy more than a traditional vodka.
Now it is clear with this version of CIROC BRANDY VS, it is a Brandy. Let's hope people get more into knowing what they drink than follow the trend - wishful thinking!

I have often heard people telling me that either they preferred clear spirits because they were 'clear' and therefore being clear did not give them headaches, or I have heard people prefer brown spirits because they ARE SOOO SMOOOTH!!! CIROC has both.
I am guessing soon we should see a Cognac from 50 cents!

Pernod, which is only behind Britain's Diageo, reported a 14% increase in sales for the first nine months of its fiscal, compared with just 1% in the year-ago period. Pernod's growth in India has been driven by its focus on premium and midpriced whiskies, helping it maintain a lead over Diageo, which has been also shifting its focus on similar categories due to meatier margins.
Pernod Ricard India sold 43 million cases last year, including Imperial Blue (18 million), Royal Stag (16 million) and Blenders Pride (6.2 million).

MORE LUXURY TO COME FROM BACARDI AND DIAGEO

cognacdailynews-bacardi-diageo-luxury

Last week, at the 42nd Annual Impact Marketing Seminar, Bacardi North America regional president Pete Carr discussed the group recent acquisition of Patron Spirits for  $5.1-billion, a deal that lifts Bacardi from the fifth-largest spirits company in terms of U.S. market share to the second-largest.

Moving forward, Carr noted, 75% the company’s business will center on three brands, split between Bacardi rum at 22%, Grey Goose vodka at 26%, and Patrón at 27%.
Turning to Bacardi’s core rum brand, Carr used the occasion to unveil a revamped and expanded upscale portfolio, with new Reserva Añejo Cuatro and Gran Reserva Diez expressions set to join Bacardi’s Reserva Ocho and Reserva Limitada. “We’re placing a huge bet on rum premiumization,” said Carr. “Rum is the last category to premiumize, and we think there’s a $550 million category opportunity.”

Carr went on to detail efforts on several other top-performing Bacardi brands, including Cazadores Tequila and D’Ussé Cognac, and explained the turnaround strategy for Grey Goose, concentrated on plans to hold price, focus on the on-premise, and attract younger LDA and multicultural consumers to the high-end vodka franchise.

Meanwhile, Javier Ferrán, chairman of Diageo, spoke on the topic “Marketing Luxury Spirits In A Changing World.” According to Ferrán, several factors are set to drive luxury spirits growth in the coming years, including a consumer propensity toward “drinking better rather than drinking more,” and the ongoing rise of the middle class in emerging markets like Asia and Africa. He estimates that more than 700 million new consumers in emerging markets will be able to afford international spirits within the next decade.

He also noted the importance of consistently maintaining—and taking—price. “A key driver of perception of quality is price,” said Ferrán. “Luxury goods brand-building is a long-term game.”

GOOGLE WILL SELL ITS OWNERSHIP OF ZAGAT

Rating Zagat
Rating Zagat

Seven years after picking up Zagat for $151 million, Google is selling off the perennial restaurant recommendation service. The New York Times is reporting this morning that the technology giant is selling off the company to The Infatuation, a review site founded nine years back by former music execs.

The company had been rumored to be courting a buyer since early this year. As Reuters noted at the time, Zagat has increasingly become less of a focus for Google, as the company began growing its database of restaurant recommendations organically. Zagat, meanwhile, has lost much of the shine it had when Google purchased it nearly a decade ago.

I have ran across this article which is very relevant to today's economy and customer trends.
More updscale, more education, more choices ... essentially everyone needs to do more!

ON-PREMISE CONSUMERS ARE ORDERING BETTER QUALITY DRINKS MORE OFTEN

More consumers are consistently ordering beverage alcohol when they go out to eat. In fact, 84% of the 1,000 consumers surveyed in Next Level Marketing's annual report (conducted in February) said they are ordering alcoholic drinks nearly every time they go out, up 5% from last year's survey. With 87% of consumers surveyed ordering the same or better quality drinks, and just 6% saying they are ordering cheaper drinks.

The number of drinks consumers are ordering per occasion on-premise has consistently stayed around 2.2 drinks the last few years, and that number is a little higher among males and millennials. While consumers may not be drinking more per occasion, the number of occasions has increased. "People are drinking more often, better quality, but in the same amount each time," said Next Level Marketing's Mike Ginley at the VIBE Conference last week.

As for where they're drinking, casual dining chains are the most visited type of bars/restaurants among those surveyed, with local independent casual dining restaurants in second place. The main drivers of determining where to go are food quality, food and drink value prices and service. Beverage programs play a key role in determining where consumers want to spend their money on a night out.

WHAT MAKES A GOOD BEVERAGE PROGRAM?
The survey found that the top five key elements to a beverage program are: (1) good value prices, (2) happy hour specials, (3) great drink quality, (4) great beer selection and (5) drink specials and promotions. A bit lower on the list, you'll find great wine selection and great cocktail selection.

EXPERIMENTATION AND BRAND LOYALTY
Experimentation of new brands is "remarkably high" across beer, wine and spirits, with about 80% of consumers responding that they tried a new brand within the past 90 days, and about 60% tried a new brand in the past month, according to Mike. Though the general consensus is that consumers are less brand loyal these days, Mike suggested that many still are brand loyal based on the fact that consumers said they only consumed about 3 or 4 brands in total over the past 90 days across each category.
